Adult Acne: Causes and Treatments

Adult Acne: Causes and Treatments

Contrary to what many people believe, acne does not only trigger during the teenage or adolescent years, as this can also afflict adults. Acne is a skin problem that is considered a normal part of growing up. However, some people just don’t outgrow the said skin complication as they become adults.

Serious cases of acne can greatly affect the lives of adults, not only physically, but on the social and emotional aspects as well. Even people who are at the age brackets of 30 to 60 are still afflicted by adult acne or serious breakouts.

Causes of adult acne

Acne in adults is generally caused by an oily substance called sebum, which is basically produced by the sebacious glands of the skin. This oily substance can clog skin pores, thus, attracting bacteria and causing inflammation. Male adults develop acne due to hypersensitivity to male hormones known as androgens, which can cause breakouts. As for women, an imbalance in female hormones can cause breakouts. Hormonal imbalance in adult women occurs during menopausal, pregnancy, and pre-menopausal stages. The use of cosmetics and some over-the-counter and prescription medications can also trigger acne in adults.

Treatment for adult acne

Adult acne is not that easy to treat. Many available medications for acne treatment today are developed for teens’ oily skin, which are not recommended for adults’ drier skin. Adults can seek the recommendations of their dermatologists for effective and convenient treatments for acne. But you can also just rely on trial-and-error strategy in treating the said skin condition.

The following are some of the recommended self-treatment approaches in treating adult acne:

Cleansers

Go for cleansing products that gentle and mild on the skin, such as the cleansing products Aquanil and Cetaphil. Stay away from strong gel products that contain granules and beads. These skin products can worsen and irritate sensitive skin.

Lotions and creams

In using lotion or cream, opt to use over-the-counter retinol skin products for cleaning pores and reducing fine wrinkles. Acne scars can be treated using products that contain glycolic and salicylic acids. You can also dry breakouts by applying benzoyl peroxide as this can help dry and kill bacteria.

Clinical solutions

If you want a faster way to treat acne, you may opt to use laser or intense pulsed light procedures that can treat and reduce acne scars. For a more effective treatment, you can choose blue light therapy treatment, for this can kill the bacteria that can cause acne. However, these clinical solutions are expensive compared to topical or medicinal treatments.

Prescription medications

Doctors can prescribe topical antibiotic clindamycin, which can fight bacteria off the skin. Oral antibiotics can also be prescribed by doctors as treatment for acne. In addition, you can ask the doctor prescription for oral contraceptives as these can help control or balance hormones in your body.

Proper skin care regimen

Proper skin care regimen is a must to prevent breakouts or acne. Always keep your face clean by washing the face twice or thrice daily. You can use facial cleansers and a soft wash cloth in washing your face. Do this for two to three minutes everytime you wash your face.

Acne Causing Foods To Avoid

Acne Causing Foods To Avoid

Food really causes acne, I can attest to that. The question now is which ones? Though I have tried so many acne treatments available over the counter, I realized that it is not what you put on your skin that cures acne but what you put inside your stomach. So to steer clear of acne breakout, I simply guarded my diet with foods that cause hormonal imbalance.

All Natural Cure For Stopping Acne In 3 Days!

Yes, food causes either hormonal balance or hormonal imbalance. And if you don’t like waking up with acne on your face, do not consume foods that causes hormonal imbalance like foods with vegetable oil. Vegetable oil is commonly used to cook foods. An example of vegetable oil is sunflower oil. You can also be sure that most junk foods like chips and cookies are processed with this culprit.

Before, I can just imagine how much vegetable oil I consume everyday. I love potato chips, chocolate chip cookies and mixed nuts. I didn’t realize I am suffering from cystic acne because of the everyday snacks I enjoy. Oh how I hate the ugly appearance of acne on my face. Not only that, they are actually painful and normally stays for weeks. So when I tried to stay away from foods that contain vegetable oil, little by little, my acne disappeared and my face became smooth as ever again.

Prevention is still better than cure, I strongly agree. Are you afraid of developing acne? Avoid foods that cause them! Already suffering from acne breakout? It’s not too late. Change your diet and watch the results.

Acne Causes and Cures – Find Out How to Prevent and Cure Acne and Spots

Acne Causes and Cures – Find Out How to Prevent and Cure Acne and Spots

Acne is a very distressing problem faced by millions of people worldwide.

One of the main types of people that suffer are teenagers. as you enter puberty and evolve into adult hood, your body starts to produce the sex hormone androgen.

When your body reaches high levels of androgen, it also starts to produce sebum. sebum is the natural oil in the skin. These excessive levels of sebum reacts with the bacteria which lives on the dead skin cells and acne is produced.

It must be noted that acne affects people of all ages and its not uncommon for older people to have skin troubles

Acne is also the result of high levels of toxins in your body. These toxins could be fatty deposits that the body has not been able to dispose of. The liver, kidneys and bowels are the body’s organs for removing toxins. When they cannot remove these toxins your body releases them through your skin

Many people with spots feel uncomfortable and unhappy and they tend to pick the spots which makes the problem much worse.

It ends in a vicious cycle which prolongs the spots. When old spots start to clear up, new spots appear because of this.

To end the cycle you have to do the following things.

1) Stop picking them

Easier said that done i know, but this is the reason it may not be clearing up. Find something to do with your hands and keep your mind busy. Distraction is the key here. Keep practicing distraction techniques and consider going to see a hypnotist. They can do wonderful things for changing your mindset and your habits

2) Drink lots of water

Drinking lots of water will detox your body and clear up your skin. Water flushes out toxins, improves your emotional state, and helps you to think clearer. You should aim to drink 8-10 glasses of water per day. If you exercise your should drink more water to re-hydrate yourself

3) Do not smoke

Smoking fills your body with toxins, creates stress and restricts your blood flow around your body, all of these things will cause spots and acne.

4) Cut down on fatty foods

Fatty foods are hard to digest and will not help any acne problems. Eat a diet rich in fresh fruit and vegetables and as talked about in point two, you should drink lots of water.

5) Use a good skin cleanser

Good dermatologists recommend a good quality skin cleanser / scrub. This will help clear the dead skins cells away and prevent the bacteria from forming spots. Use a facial wash daily and a gentle scrub 1-2 times a week.

6) Cut down on sugar intake

Excess sugar in your diet will promote the growth of bacteria and acne. Make a list of all the foods and drinks your consume, that contain sugar, and work to reduce your intake

7) Hot Steam

Hot steam opens your skin pores and will help to remove the bacteria from your pores. You can use a special facial sauna or go to the gym and use their sauna. After cleansing you should splash your face with cold water to close your pores.

Adolescent Acne?Causes, Effects, Prevention And Treatment

Adolescent Acne?Causes, Effects, Prevention And Treatment

Some people consider acne as a symptom of youthfulness and since adolescent age proceeds youth, they think it is a fertile period for its growth. It has been noted that that almost 100% of adolescents between the ages of 12 to 20 experience acne lesions in various forms at one time or another. They generally appear as whiteheads, blackheads or pimples on their faces.

Main cause- Increased hormonal activity

The reason for adolescent acne is that the hormone levels become high during this period. The heightened hormone levels trigger the generation of sebum, an oily substance, in the sebaceous glands. Since the sebaceous glands are attached to the hair follicles, the increased production of sebum blocks them with dead cells resulting in the appearance of acne lesions.

Generally acne starts appearing between the ages of 10-13 and continues to occur for 5 -10 years. It begins to vanish at the age of 20+ and completely disappears by the age of 25. In some severe cases, it may last up to age of 30 or even beyond. Severe acne is known as nodular or cystic acne.

Psychological impact of acne on adolescents

Since adolescent children, especially girls, are overly conscious of their beauty, the appearance of acne lesions causes them deep emotional pain. They feel embarrassed and lose their self-esteem and develop inferiority complex. This takes a toll of their emotional health and studies.

A large majority of them avoid going to school. Others stop socializing with their girl and boyfriends. There are still others who become lonely and introvert. They contract psychological problems.

PreventionHygiene

Most adolescent children between the ages of 12-14 lack the knowledge of basic hygiene. There are others who overdrive their cleanliness by washing the face several times a day. It should be noted that acne is not caused by grime and dirt. As already mentioned, it generally results when excessive secretion of sebum blocks the hair follicles.

Wash your face twice daily with a non-medicated soap. Excessive washing, rubbing and medication may overdry the skin leading to a rebound in the secretion of sebum.

Also, do not use abrasive sponges or clothes as they may cause invisible abrasions and allow bacteria to enter and cause infection.

Treatment

In a majority of cases, acne can be treated at home when it is still mild. The best course is to gently wash the acne affected area and apply over- the- counter medications such as benzoyl peroxide or salicylic acid.

You may also use certain moisturizers specially created for acne prone skin. They will help it to maintain the right balance of moisture. They contain ingredients that act as sun screen.

Be careful to read the label. It should mention the words: “for acne-prone skin”. It will ensure that the product does not contain any harmful ingredient for acne.

Most acne lesions become worse when they are picked, pressed or scratched. They are likely to be infected and inflamed with your nails. So, resist the temptation of meddling with them.

This elementary treatment and precautions are likely to cure acne in about 6-8 weeks. Check with your dermatologist, if it refuses to disappear after this period.

Acne Causes and Treatment and Natural remedies for Acne Scars and Cystic Acne

Teenage acne can be an embarrassing condition for any young adult to suffer from, as if hormones and puberty weren’t bad enough on their own. Taking proper care of your skin and following a few home remedies can help improve or cure your acne.

Teenage acne can cause shame and unattractive pimples that usually show up during a time when you really don’t want them to. Many teenagers have acne because of hormone issues, and sometimes adults breakout also.

When should you start acne treatment?

Since everyone gets acne at some time, the right time to treat it is when it bothers you. This can be when severe acne flares suddenly, mild acne that just won’t go away, or even when a single pimple decides to show up the week before your prom or wedding.

Here are some factors that don’t usually cause acne, at least by themselves:

1. Heredity: With the exception of very severe acne, most people do not have the problem exactly as their parents did. Almost everyone has some acne at some point in their life.

2. Food: Parents often tell teens to avoid pizza, chocolate, greasy and fried foods, and junk food. While these foods may not be good for overall health, they don’t cause acne or make it worse. Although some recent studies have implicated milk and dairy products in aggravating acne, these findings are far from established.

3. Dirt: As mentioned above, “blackheads” are oxidized oil, not dirt. Sweat does not cause acne, therefore, it is not necessary to shower instantly after exercise for fear that sweat will clog pores. On the other hand, excessive washing can dry and irritate the skin.

4. Stress: Some people get so upset by their pimples that they pick at them and make them last longer. Stress, however, does not play much of a direct role in causing acne.

Home Remedies for Acne

1. Mix lemon juice with rose water. One lemon with same proportion of rose water will do. Apply it on your face and rinse it only after 30 mins. Constantly doing so will not only get rid of acne and pimples, but it also has the effect of lightening the skin blemishes.

2. Use fresh mint juice to apply on your face.

3. Strawberry leaves can also help to reduce the pimple swelling.

4. Orange peel can also be used. Basically, you need to mash it or blend it, mix with some water to form a paste before applying on your problem area.

5. Mix turmeric powder with some mint juice before applying on the acne. Wash it off with clean, lukewarm water after about 30 mins.

6. Even cooking condiments such as vinegar and salt have their uses as home remedies for acne. Mix the two together, before rubbing the mix over the pimples. Leave it there for some 10 to 20 mins before removing with lukewarm water.

7. Make a paste with cucumber before using it as a facial mask. Leave the mask on for 30 mins daily. Doing this will prevent acne from breaking out.

8. If you can tolerate the smell of garlic on your face, then go ahead to apply some fresh garlic on the pimples. They will disappear after repeated applications.
